Best Cities for Craft Beer Lovers
By Kimberly Graf. Published on September 5, 2025
The advent of craft beers is a relatively new trend sweeping the nation. In the last twenty to thirty years, tons of breweries of all sizes have cropped up in certain city centers to start peddling their beers. Of course, some of these locations have been popular for a good long while – and while the crafting of beer isn't a new thing, it's more the appreciation for it that has grown in the population.
So let's get started with some of the top cities for craft beer lovers. All of these cities claim to be, in some capacity, the leader in craft beers in America. So you know that they're going to be full of the best brews and locations!
San Diego, California
San Diego is the first on our list for their entire craft beer culture. Not to mention they have the most breweries of any other city on this list. There are 137 breweries located in the San Diego area. The odds are, you're going to find a brew that you can't resist! With that many options, you'll always be able to try something new.
There's the 'Hops Highway', which is a street with breweries in every lot. Stop in to any one of them for a delicious sampling of some local favorites. But another great feature of the brewing companies in San Diego is their tasting rooms. From the 137 breweries open there, 30 have tasting rooms. One of the best is at Societe Brewing Company – they give public tours of their process and brewing stations, and it's a nice, open, industrial place to sit and drink their rotating stock of special beers.
One of San Diego's top beers is the West Coast IPA by Green Flash Brewing Company, which is a hearty and delicious version of the IPA blend in other parts of the country.
Chicago, Illinois
They're on the 'to-watch' list for craft beer communities popping up all over the country. In Chicago, there are dozens of new breweries, from micro to medium-sized ones. They are famous for their tap rooms – where the beer flows freely and you can just hang out and taste it.
One of the best tap rooms is the Vice District Brewing Company. There are board games, plenty of comfortable seating, and your pets are even welcome! They keep a rotating list of the beers made on site and seasonal offerings as well that you can sample and try.
Another popular brewery in Chicago is the Goose Island Brewing Company, which creates two locally-loved beers: their excellent Bourbon City Stout and the Goose IPA. Both are served in a pretty amazing tap room.
Portland, Oregon
It's no secret that the people of Portland love their craft beer. In fact, about 44% of all beer sold in Portland is locally-made craft beer. There are 91 breweries in total, though that number has been on the rise lately as more people decide to get into the business.
The cool thing is, 60 of those breweries are regularly producing award-winning beers. There's something special about Portland, because they can't seem to stop making amazing beers! While you're there, step into any one of the amazing breweries and pick up a variety of their creations – chances are, they've won awards.
One notable place is Occidental Brewing Company. It's a German-style brewery that uses German recipes to make their beer. They have a nice, spacious patio where you can sit and enjoy, and they make German brats as well to pair beautifully with the beers' flavors.
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
When you think about it, Philadelphia's spot on this list was a no-brainer. The birthplace of the American Revolution is just as full of beer enthusiasts today as it was during the Revolutionary War, when they were birthing the idea of a nation in taverns.
Today, some of those old buildings have been repurposed and turned into brewing companies. Dock Street Brewing Company is one such older, historic building that now houses a brewery that you can go hang out at. Here, they serve pizzas, some wine, and even some beers that are TV Show themed!
When you're finished checking that out, head over to Yards Brewing Company. Here, they make Poor Richard's Tavern Spruce – which is based on Benjamin Franklin's original brewing formula. It's a blast from the past, to be sure.
San Francisco, California
Here, there are 50 different breweries and tapestries active, paired with a healthy brewing culture. There are just as many breweries now as there were in the period before Prohibition occurred, which is a pretty amazing comeback.
One of the favorites in San Francisco is the 21st Amendment (the name of the appeal of that prohibition law)! There is a taproom and restaurant pretty much attached. This company is known for its distribution of cans with their seasonal blends in them. That's pretty awesome if you ask us!
