The Best Cinco de Mayo Celebrations

Cinco de Mayo is upon us! This annual celebration of the Mexican Army's victory in the 1862 Battle of Puebla is a huge event in many places around the country. Here are some of the best places to celebrate Cinco de Mayo without having to cross the border.

San Antonio

San Antonio, Texas also celebrates Derby Day. This is a holiday specifically set aside for the Kentucky Derby. If you're heading out to any restaurants or bars on the 5th of May this year, expect to have a healthy mix of people celebrating Cinco de Mayo as well as Derby Day.

Basically every bar in town will be having some sort of celebration for these events. It's the perfect day to get a margarita at some of your favorite local spots. And when you're finished with that, the Historic Market square has a full three-day event that features Latin American music, dancing, as well as Tex-Mex food options and concerts by music artists.

Chicago

If you're looking for a little adult-themed fun in Chi-town, check out the Annual Cinco de Mayo pub crawl From 11 am to 6 pm, take a tour of some of Chicago's best bars. For participating, you get a t-shirt and a few gift cards that you can use along the way, provided you're wearing your wristband! You also get admission to a brunch buffet.

For families, there's an annual parade on Sacramento Drive that is full of cultural music, dress, and dancing. Before or after the celebrations, head to one of Chicago's Mexican restaurants to partake in some of the special authentic menus!

Washington, DC

The nation's capital hosts the National Cinco de Mayo festival each year. This event is completely free and includes food and drinks, family-friendly activities for kids and teens, as well as live music and performances by the Maru Montero Dance Company. It's a full celebration of Latin-American culture, and it takes place right in front of the National Monument.

Los Angeles

This city is famous for its celebration, called the Fiesta Broadway. It's the largest festival in the country for this holiday. Along Broadway Street and around City Hall, there will be musical artists and Latin American dancing, as well as authentic food from local vendors. It's a full-service carnival with games and rides as well, so it's fun for the whole family! If you live in Southern California or are going to be in the area for this celebration, it's definitely worth your while to go!

New Orleans

New Orleans is, as always, an excellent place to celebrate any occasion! There are very few places in this city that won't be having some sort of block party or celebration! As always, the center of the party will be at Mexican restaurants and eateries around the city. Some of them have discounted drinks, or even pepper-eating parties!

America sure gives Mexico a run for their money when celebrating one of the favorite holidays of our southern neighbors!
