What's new
Small, steady improvements to the site. This page lists the changes you might actually notice.
September 2026
- Find your car’s MPG. Choose your car to check its fuel economy and use its MPG when estimating the gas cost of your trip. Find your car.
- Easier gas-cost calculations. A clearer message helps you correct your
car’s fuel consumption if you enter an invalid value.
- Updated US gas-cost estimates. We fixed outdated fuel prices so you can
get a more useful estimate of what your drive will cost.
- We now explain how we calculate everything. A new
methodology page describes where our distances and travel times come
from, what the times do and do not include, and the cases where our numbers are approximate:
mountain passes, ferries, tolls and routes with no road connection.
- Maps appear sooner. The route map used to sit as a blank grey box for a few
seconds. It now starts loading as soon as you begin using the page, and shows that it is loading
instead of looking broken.
- A clear message when a route cannot be calculated. If we cannot work out a
driving route, usually because there is no road connection between the two places, you now get
a page that says so, with the straight-line distance and a way to try something else, instead of
a browser error.
- The right city, not the one next door. A handful of searches used to land
on a neighbouring town instead of the city you asked for. They now resolve to the place you
actually typed.
- Fixed broken distance links. A number of cities had links that led to an
error page. They now work.
- Clearer road trip mileages. On the US road trips
page, the mileage shown is the length of the scenic route itself, which is usually longer than
the fastest direct drive between the same two towns. That is now stated on the page, and the
Overseas Highway entry has been corrected to run from Key Largo, where the highway actually
begins.
- Security improvements. Routine hardening across the site.
- Terms of use published. See terms of use.
August 2026
- Weather for Canada and Australia, and a seven-day forecast. Weather used to
be limited to US cities. It now covers all three countries, and shows the week ahead rather than
just today. That is more useful when you are planning a trip rather than leaving right now.
- Faster, more reliable search. The search box now works out which place you
mean on its own instead of waiting on an outside lookup, so results come back quicker and keep
working when that service does not.
- Fixed pages that failed to load. Some routes returned a blank page instead
of a result. They now load normally; where a piece of information is missing, that section is
simply left out rather than breaking the whole page.
July 2026
- Fewer errors when the site is busy. During heavy traffic some pages used to
fail to produce a route. They now hold up, and when something does go wrong it is detected and
recovered automatically instead of waiting for someone to notice.
June 2026
- The search box understands you better. State abbreviations, "st" for
"saint", and the misspellings people actually type now resolve to the right place.
April 2026
- Current weather for both cities. Distance pages now show what the weather is
doing at each end of the trip, which is usually the next thing you want to know after how far it
is.
March 2026
- Route maps got much lighter. The map data behind a long route dropped from
around 340 KB to 87 KB, so pages arrive faster. It is a noticeable difference on a phone or a slow
connection.

routes get checked.
